Africana Studies

Vision

The Africana Studies Department employs an interdisciplinary approach to research, interpret, analyze, preserve and disseminate the multifaceted experiences, histories, and cultures of peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora, investigating its critical challenges and emergent issues.

Mission

The Africana Studies Department has set as its mission:

  • To promote an understanding of  the historical and contemporary experiences of peoples of Africa and the African diaspora;
  • To advance the intellectual development of students through the acquisition, synthesis, dissemination, and application of knowledge;
  • To provide an environment -- through courses, advising, and programming -- that supports students in their personal growth;
  • To dispel myths and stereotypes about race, class, gender, and sexual identity through course content, programs, exchanges of ideas, and inter-cultural interaction;
  • To teach students academic skills through courses and activities that promote research, writing, reading, effective communication, and study abroad;
  • To promote a transnational perspective that will foster socio-cultural and political awareness to meet the critical challenges posed by globalization, professional careers, as well as the demands of the work world through exposure to relevant experiences and course requirements;
  • To promote sound values contributing to solving problems in ways that enhance human development and security;
  • To establish and maintain the Department’s interdisciplinary  frame through cooperative arrangements with other academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and across the University;   
  • To serve and contribute to local, national, and international civic institutions
